these are the most ambitious projects which are in the pipeline for implementation.
these projects will make the railways a major engine of the country’s growth.
Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu, who stated this in the Lok Sabha ;
also informed about a proposal to lay separate rail lines for freight trains and setting a target to lay at least 10 km new rail track per day.
Insisting that passenger safety is a major priority for his ministry,
Suresh Prabhu said we are using the latest technology to upgrade all the unmanned level crossings in the country and trying to make them safer than ever before.
Investment in railways has declined over the years compared to the road sector in India while it has gone up significantly in countries like China,
he said we are preparing a “clear cut road map”,
under which, we are planning to invest around Rs 8.5 lakh crore.

General Budget, Prabhu shot back stating “ the government had inherited problems from the previous dispensations”.

the Modi government had initiated investments to the tune of
Rs 3.5 lakh crore in the last three years. Talking about the strengthening of infrastructure,
Prabhu said we will convert all the meter gauge into broad gauge tracks in the next five years.
we will also try to equip all trains with bio-toilets by October 2, 2019.
As of now, there is 3650 km of meter gauge tracks. we are focusing to convert them into broad gauge lines.
According to the government target, the entire track of meter gauge in the North East will be the broad gauge.
by the end of this year. Prabhu said the government is working on three more dedicated freight corridors to increase the freight capacity of Railways.

He said we have initiated a major program for redevelopment of stations under PPP mode.
presently around 23 stations are going through the bidding process.
The Minister said we have allocated Rs one lakh crore fund to strengthen the safety mechanism of the network.
In this context, he said the projects include track renewal, driver training, signal up-gradation, and installation of a train protection warning system.
all the states are getting higher allocation in the budget.
this year we have tried to allocate a higher budget in comparison to the previous government’s budget outlay to almost all the states,
our ministry has given Almost all the states with higher allocation in the budget compared to outlay made by previous governments, said Prabhu.
On digital initiatives, he said currently 15,000 e-tickets are being issued per minute and 68 percent of total tickets purchased are through digital platforms.
Prabhu said we are introducing the latest technology for critical operations including for manufacturing of rolling stocks.
The manufacturing of conventional coaches has been stopped.
